Avoid Common Mistakes That Beginning Reporters Make

Its the time of the year when introductory reporting class students are submitting their first articles for the student newspaper. And, as always happens, there are certain mistakes that these beginning reporters make semester after semester. So here is a list of common mistakes that novice journalists should avoid when writing their first news stories. Do More Reporting Too often beginning journalism students turn in stories that are weak, not necessarily because theyre poorly written, but because theyre thinly reported. Their stories dont have enough quotes, background information or statistical data, and its clear that theyre trying to piece together an article on the basis of meager reporting. A good rule of thumb: Do more reporting than is necessary. And interview more sources than you need to. Get all the relevant background information and statistics and then some. Do this and your stories will be examples of solid journalism, even if you havent yet mastered the newswriting format. Get More Quotes This goes along with what I said above about reporting. Quotes breathe life into news stories and without them, articles are arid and dull. Yet many journalism students submit articles that contain few if any quotes. Theres nothing like a good quote to breathe life into your article so always do plenty of interviews for any story you do. Back Up  Broad Factual Statements Beginning journalists are prone to making broad factual statements in their stories without backing them up with some sort of statistical data or evidence. Take this sentence: The vast majority of Centerville College students hold down jobs while also going to school. Now that may be true, but if you dont present some evidence to back it up there is no reason your readers should trust you. Unless youre writing something thats plainly obvious, such as the Earth is round and the sky is blue, make sure to dig up the facts to support what you have to say. Get Full Names of Sources Beginning reporters often make the mistake of just getting the first names of people they interview for stories. This is a no-no. Most editors will not use quotes unless the story contains the full name of the person being quoted along with some basic biographical information. For example, if you interviewed James Smith, an 18-year-old business major from Centerville, you should include that information when you identify him in your story. Likewise, if you interview English professor Joan Johnson, you should include her full job title when you quote her. No First Person Students who have been taking English classes for years often feel the need to use the first person I in their news stories. Dont do it. Reporters almost never resort to using the first person in their hard news stories. Thats because news stories should be an objective, dispassionate account of events, not something in which the writer injects his or her opinions. Keep yourself out of the story and save your opinions for movie reviews or editorials. Break Up the Long Paragraphs Students accustomed to writing essays for English classes tend to write paragraphs that go on and on forever, like something out of a Jane Austen novel. Get out of that habit. Paragraphs in news stories should typically be no more than two to three sentences long. There are practical reasons for this. Shorter paragraphs look less intimidating on the page, and they make it easier for editors to trim a story on a tight deadline. If you find yourself writing a paragraph that runs more than three sentences, break it up. Short Ledes The same holds true for the lede of the story. Ledes should generally be just one sentence of no more than 35 to 40 words. If your lede gets much longer than that it means youre probably trying to cram too much information into the first sentence. Remember, the lede should just be the main point of the story. The small, nitty-gritty details should be saved for the rest of the article. And there is rarely any reason to write a lede thats more than one sentence long. If you cant summarize the main point of your story in one sentence, then you probably dont really know what the story is about, to begin with. Spare Us the Big Words Sometimes beginning reporters think that if they use long, complicated words in their stories they will sound more authoritative. Forget it. Use words that are easily understood by anyone, from the fifth-grader to the college professor. Remember, youre not writing an academic paper but an article that will be read by a mass audience. A news story isnt about showing off how smart you are. Its about conveying important information to your readers. A Few Other Things When writing an article for the student newspaper always remember to put your name at the top of the article. This is necessary if you want to get a byline for your story. Also, save your stories under file names that relate to the topic of the article. So if youve written a story about tuition increasing at your college, save the story under the file name tuition hike or something like that. That will enable the editors of the paper to quickly and easily find your story and place it in the proper section of the paper.

Through studying the Old Testament, there have been several instances that I have come across that help us better understand who God is. In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah states, â€Å"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. The US was not able to hold negotiations with North Vietnam because it proved difficult. Instead, President Johnson decided to wage a war on Vietnam which left many people suffering. Patience is a virtue that political and military leaders should learn to have. Good decisions do not need a rush. The US wanted to end communism with immediate effect in order to implement their capitalism policy to South Vietnam. Following a long route seemed not to work, and they decided to take a shortcut which had so many adverse effects. Destroying another nation in order to make them adopt your policies is something which should be discouraged globally. I think if they had changed their tactic earlier they would have succeeded. They should not have waged war on North Vietnam yet their problem would have been solved. In the operation the US lost more aircrafts compared to their enemy, more than nine hundred American aircrafts were destroyed while on the other hand less than two hundred Vietnamese aircrafts were brought down. (Austin, 2013). From my standpoint, the operation was conducted with more of personal interest rather than helping all. Changing Asian nations to be capitalists like the US was just a way to have the US dominating the world. Most Asian countries are still communists. This can act as prove that the Operation Rolling Thunder's objectives were not attained as expected. Conclusion The American war over the Asian nations which support communism will not be solved over military attacks. The attacks just cause pain, destruction, deaths and bring development of the involved nations back. Some of the objectives of the operation have failed to be achieved. There are other peaceful methods of problem solving. Political and military leaders should know this friendly methods of getting solutions. Violence is not the way forward to success. The US had four main objectives in the operation. These were: To end the support of North Vietnam in the South in order to stop communism. To destroy the nuclear weapons which it feared would be used in starting a third world war especially after the outcomes of the Second World War. Nuclear bomb was used by the United States in destroying two cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The effects were so severe that the US did not want another war. Destroying North Vietnams transport infrastructure, air defense system and industrial base because they made it powerful. To boost the Saigon regime in the South Vietnam. To obtain these objectives was not an easy task. The communists nations provided military aid to North Vietnam, the Peoples Republic of China and the USSR allied with North Vietnam. So many people were affected in the war. The US used military trained people in the war. On the other side Vietnam used the Civilians who had no knowledge of war as well as the military. The citizens were forced to fight to defend their nation from the US attacks. Thousands of innocent people lost their lives trying to resist the war. Person 5: He is a senior manager of a corporate firm. His age is 38. He used to shop the daily consumer goods for his family from Coles. He said that his wife is a regular consumer of Kelloggs Special K. The results of the focus group depict the fact that the none of the customers is buyers of two products simultaneously. The focus group interview process illustrates the result that the different consumers mostly follow all the consumer decision-making processes. Apart from the Person 5, all the rest consumers follow the stages. Among the five respondent, two persons claimed that they are very much focused on the evaluation alternatives more than any other stages of decision making process. The consumers have chosen the products because they think that the products will surpass the latent demands of them as per the taste, price and quality of the products (Maity and Dass 2014). Conclusion It can be concluded that, the companies must focus on the different aspects of the consumers shopping attributes as it affects a lot on the profitability of the company and the sales volume as a whole. The world is metaphorically our oyster, a small thing that is easily held in our grasp. As the poem progresses into the fourth verse, the hawk awakes from its stillness and takes flight: Or fly up, and revolve it all slowly I kill where I please because it is all mine. There is no sophistry in my body: My manners are tearing off heads - Firstly the writer projects an image of the hawk flying above with a birds-eye view as the world revolves. Interestingly, it is the hawk that is doing the revolving. All of its dominion merely orbit around it. The hawk also owns its territory so it can kill where I please. These first two lines is a link to the last verse which further underlines the hawks supremacy. Similarly, we exploit the Earth because we believe it belongs to us. Although we consider ourselves a civilised race, the writer points out that some of our methods are far from graceful. In fact, he describes our way of living as tearing off heads. For example, we factory-farm animals for profit and we invade other countries to quench our thirst for fuel. As we become the masters of our planet, we grow insensitive to the fact that our greed is causing us to regress back to savages. The poem turns even more chilling as it enters the fifth verse: The allotment of death. For the one path of my flight is direct Through the bones of the living. Here the hawk is a metaphorical grim reaper. Its job is the allotment of death. From this verse we also perceive an image of the hawk swooping down on its prey as it flies through the bones of the living. The writer describes this as the one path of my flight that is direct. He is implying that the only constant element in a hawks life is to kill. Just like the hawk, we can allocate death as well because the earth is our domain. During our lifetimes we sacrifice the lives of many other creatures to fulfil our desires. We kill animals for food and we hunt exotic species for commodities. We are not that different from the hawk, after all. The final verse stresses the permanence of the hawks reign: The sun is behind me. Nothing has changed since I began. My eye has permitted no change. I am going to keep things like this. The phrase the sun is behind me implies that even the sun is a supporter of the hawk. Here the writer conveys yet another image to us. The suns rays are chasing after the hawk as if following a great leader. Nothing can unseat it from power. On the other hand, this verse also criticises the human aversion to change. For example, people still pollute the planet even though they know it can cause climate change and natural disasters. The last three lines highlight this fact. We have not done anything in the past to amend our mistakes Nothing has changed since I began. We are unwilling act now My eye has permitted no change. We will not abandon our methods in the future I am going to keep things like this. This is the heart of Ted Hughes criticism. We humans, as the masters of this world, are continuously destroying our planet because we are reluctant to change our wicked ways. In the end, Hawk Roosting is fundamentally an illustration of a magnificent creature. Nevertheless, Hughes masterfully embedded his critique on humanity into the poem.
